Technical Tours

Technical tours are a highlight of AIHce EXP programming, offering attendees the opportunity to go “behind the scenes” to look at OEHS issues in the daily operation of a facility or program. These tours are led by an industrial hygienist or other safety professional. Tours are considered part of the education program, and CM points are awarded in the same manner as if a registrant were attending a session. We offer a limited number of tours during AIHce EXP, which defines the facilities selected as those featuring “best practice” OEHS standards.

Southeast Water Pollution Control Plant

TT-02: Southeast Water Pollution Control Plant - Philadelphia, PA

9:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Description: The Philadelphia Water Department’s (PWD) Southeast Water Pollution Control Plant treats in excess of 75 million gallons of wastewater per day before it is returned to the Delaware River. The Southeast plant is an award-winning plant, which meets or exceeds National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit limits and effluent parameters annually. The tour will show the steps that wastewater goes through after traveling through the city sewers. The wastewater receives preliminary treatment (bar racks and screens to remove debris plus grit channels to remove heavy inorganic matter), primary treatment (removal of suspended solids with primary sedimentation tanks), and secondary treatment (using biological processes to remove organic material still dissolved or suspended in the wastewater after primary treatment). The settled solids obtained from the primary sedimentation tanks and the secondary sludge are pumped via force main to the Southwest WPCP for thickening and digestion. The digested sludge is then sent to the Biosolids Recycling Center where it is thickened, dewatered, and made into pellets at a privately owned and operated facility under contract with the PWD. The resulting pellets are used as fertilizer or fuel for certain commercial processes.
